REFLECTIONS TASK

Reflection 1 (Mini Assignment CALL)

Assalamualaikum W.B.T,

This is our first reflection on any course that incorporate the use of computer in the teaching and learning and relate it to any three stages of CALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning) which are Behaviourist CALL, Communicative CALL and Integrative CALL

1) Which courses incorporate the use of computer in teaching and learning?
- Linguistics for Students of Literature
The lecturer taught us the theory of the foregrounding features and we were asked to find a movie and make an analysis in a group of 4. This task requires us to use a few software in assisting the preparation for the presentation. some of the software that we used was MP3 cutter and Windows Movie Maker. after the editing part of the movie took place, we were then worked together in analyzing the foregrounding features.

2) Were the computer-based activities related to any of the three stages of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)?
- Yes, this is related to communicative and integrative CALL

3) What are the important concepts in the three stages of CALL related to the activities?
- Communicative CALL
The lecturer already introduce us the foregrounding theory and we as the learners explore and discover new things by doing the analysis of the movie to understand the theory better. Computer acted as one of the group members as it help us to complete the task given.

- Integrative CALL
The lecturer did not simply give the assignment but she also collaborate in solving the task. By using the computer, students are exposed to the authentic use of language.

Reflection 2 (Lesson Plan)

Assalamualaikum W.B.T

This is the second reflection which is based on the activity that was given to us in which we were required to make a lesson plan. This lesson plan must be based on what we learn from CALL or Computer Assisted Language Learning. As we know, computer is a very important tool and even in education nowadays, teacher uses computer to attract students. There are many software and websites that can help in assisting the process of learning English Language, especially. The countless numbers of computer aids create more interactive learning for the students and help them to come out with better quality of work with the assistance of the technology.

As for the lesson plan activity, we learned that :-

1) Being a teacher is not as easy as people thought it will be. Being a teacher is a noble job and it is very hard to make a class more interesting as different students have different behavior and interest. A teacher needs a very well-planned lesson to make sure all students to get benefit from it.

2) English language learning is merely not a simple thing. People always stereotype English Language learning as something easy as people learn it since a very young age. Yet, English language learning should not be taken for granted as everything we learn has its own level of difficulties.

3) We as a group manage to challenge ourselves to do a lesson plan for the higher level students despite of the fact that there are not much websites which provide English Language learning program for the higher level student like secondary school and university students but we decided that this is the time for us to challenge ourselves and move out from our comfort zone.

4) The process of recap on things that we learned at the end of the learning process is important to know our understanding on something.

5) Team work is very important in order to accomplish each task. Team work is not only important in dividing the works to complete an assignment but also to teach one another on how to accept suggestions and criticisms openly. We really hope that we will manage to maintain the spirit of working as a team not only for this subject but other subjects as well.

6) In the process of giving comments to other groups or presenters, we learnt that both negative and positive comments are equally important. the negative comments should be proposed subtly so that the comments can be accepted with a smile no matter how negative it is. We also learnt that it is okay to make mistakes since errors are part of the learning process.

In short, CALL assessment activity which is making a lesson plan was a new experience for some of us and we had so much fun discovering new things through the presentations by our fellow classmates.

Reflection 3 (CMC)

Assalamualaikum W.B.T,

-This is reflection for our second assignment on CMC or Computer mediated Communication. From this assignment, we found that modernism makes people's live more easier

-People can communicate among themselves despite where they are. We may know people from other countries and make  a lot of friends as well as gaining some experience through the help of technology.

- The existence of various social networks and blogs give us the chances we need in expressing our inner thoughts. For those who are introvert, social networks are definitely the best medium to speak up their mind  as well as gaining knowledge in return, from other people on the sites.

-But, one thing that we must always remember that all things have its limitations especially in sharing personal matters. One should consider the amount of information and to what extent the detail of an information should be exposed to the public. This is very important as a step of precaution of cyber bullying.

- However, the freedom of communication through social network should be given close observation too especially when it comes to the opposite genders. one should not mis use the advantage of socializing through social networks by committing anything which is against the rules of Allah SWT. The boundaries between men and women in communicating be it in spoken or written form should be made in the most natural way without any lustful intention.

Reflection 4 (Mini proposal)

Assalamulaikum W.B.T,

This is the 3rd assignment and final assignment. We were given a task to make a research proposal based on Computer Assisted Language Learning. We were required to design a research that can benefit the learners of English in Learning English using the computer or multimedia. As for this assignment we found that:-

1) World has changed a lot, so do people. Different type of learning approach is needed to attract people in learning certain language.

2) The use of computer makes things easier and faster. Language learning become more interesting as the use of visual aid and sounds keep the learners awake and enhance the learning process by making it more interactive and less boring.

3) But, too much relying on technology may sometimes destroy people as people may face problem to face the reality.

4)However, face to face interaction between the learners and teachers is still important and should be maintained despite of the modernism n which the technology is offering. after all, face to face communication will not only gives immediate response, but also strengthen the relationship among the servant of Allah SWT.

5) The advancement of technology has its own positive and negative effects. Thus, one should use the mind given by the creator in order to differentiate between good and bad.

More on the subject

1.Definition of Sociolinguistics
2.Origins and main figures

1.Definition of Sociolinguistics
“The aim of sociolinguistic investigation is to achieve a further progress in the knowledge of nature and the operation of human language by the study of language in its social context. Besides, all Sociolinguistics is language and society but, however, not all language and society are Sociolinguistics(Trudgill, 2000).

“Sociolinguistics is an interdisciplinary science which is concerned with relationships between language and society” (Campoy & Almeida, 2005).
2.Origins and main figures

ORIGINS:
Saussure & Chomsky concepts

PROMINENT FIGURES:
 Peter Trudgill

New discipline of Linguistics:
Developed from the last 30 years.

Origins  focused on:

1.The structure of langue/parole & the diachronic/synchronic suggested by Ferdinand de Saussure:
-Langue/Parole  Internal Linguistics / Microlinguistics(phonology, morphology, syntax)
-Diachronic/Synchronic External Linguistics/ Macrolinguistics
(acquisition-use of language and culture-society-language connection)

2.The competence/actions notions by Noam Chomsky.
According to Trudgill:
Macrolinguistics focused on the study of the language(large-scale - group behaviour).
Microlinguistics focused on the description-analysis of languages (small groups).

SAUSSUREAN CONCEPT OF LANGUAGE:
Related with Chomsky’s competence:
- Focused on the ideal speaker/listener(control of language - a homogeneous community)
-Languages - autonomous and coherent systems.

IN THE PAST: linguistics focused on microlinguistics, ignoring macrolinguistics.
